AR for Contemporary Art

LM3LABS initiated a collaboration with Jean-Michel Othoniel, one of France’s most prominent contemporary artist.

The first collaboration started with Augmented Reality at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo.
An “AR room” lets people, mostly kids, discover 12 major works from the artist which would be difficult to bring in the location.
Kids can discover, handle, turn and examine each work in details.
This room is complemented by a side workshop for kids where they can draw and color models they have discovered with AR.

The exhibition which is curated by Tokyo-based La Boite and sponsored by French apparel brand Bonpoint will last until March 11th, 2012 and will be followed by the same exhibition in Macao and New York. Bonpoint’s shops will be equipped with the Mac version of the AR application (the museum version runs on Linux).

The 3-month exhibition was inaugurated on January 6th by Imperial Princess Takamado and France’s ambassador, Mr Christian Masset.

If you are in Tokyo, you can get more information about the exhibition on Tokyo Art Beat web site.

For its bicentenary celebration, Perrier-Jouet, the famous French champagne brand, tapped LM3LABS for two interactive and touchless books similar to what was done for Dior in Singapore.

The books used AirStrike to track hands and gestures in mid-air and let users turn pages or click on elements on pages.

The books presented Perrier-Jouet history since 1811, the Emile Galle period and its 2011 legacy with so talented artist Daniel Ashram.

In the continuation of the 3DFeel avatar series, LM3LABS had the opportunity to present the “Samurai avatar”, a realtime 3D masterpiece, at Futur-en-Seine in Paris.

LM3LABS was invited as part of the Cool Japan initiative. Our focus was to associate technologies to Japanese traditions.

Panasonic started a European roadshow series to promote their 3D sensor in association with LM3LABS’ 3DFeel full body tracking middleware.

The second application delivered to Panasonic is a Flight Race game where users use hands, gestures and body to pilote their plane into scoring rings.

The game targets digital signage professionals as it dynamically embed in-game advertising.

It is 100% built for Panasonic sensor and can be customized to various sponsors.

Digital Content Expo 2010: mid-air finger tracking makes the headlines

We want to thank all our visitors at Digital Content Expo 2010 last week.

LM3LABS demonstrated 2 solutions out from their technologies:

The Touchless Ironman Experiences

Thousands of visitors could experience the touchless interaction with digital content displayed on a semi-rounded and transparent interface similar to what can be seen in the Iron Man movie. LM3LABS’ AirStrike was tracking fingers, hands and gestures very accurately in mid-air.

The experience was magic.

Interactive Go: hi-precision finger tracking on a piece of wood

LM3LABS’ vision is aimed at hiding technology to make it invisible to users. We wanted to demonstrate the association of digital technology to analog environment and we have selected our finger tracking technology in association to a traditional Japanese Go game (also called Go-ban). A Go-ban is a very beautiful piece of wood made in a single piece. We projected the game from the top, integrating the projector and camera into a (our designer Edern’s) hand-made traditional Japanese lamp.

The technologie is called Movaction and it tracks fingers extremities, hand and gestures very accurately. The tracking is made from top ad it is completely impossible to embed any sensors into the 20cm thick piece of wood.
Players could point at the position they want and “stones” appeared in a magic way.

After a few stones, the game was accidentally broken and Japanese carps were swimming under the Go grid.

LM3LABS’ work had a great media coverage:

End of June, EDB, Singapore’s Economic Development Bureau, presented at World Cities Summit 2010.

The 2,000 square feet booth was designed by former Red Dot Design Awards judge Chris Lee. Inside it embedded LM3LABS’ interactive technologies like AirStrike. The result is a state-of-the-art interactive experience.

CNET Asia’s Nicholas Aaron Kho covered the event with an article.

Welcome to the Tokyo Interaction Center!

LM3LABS and partners are thrilled to introduce the Tokyo Interactive Center (TinC), Tokyo’s first community dedicated to interaction and user experience (UX).

We hear more and more about “interactivity”, “touch” or “experience” from many different areas, from researchers at universities, large and small technology companies, advertising agencies, creators and artists and of course end-users, thanks in no small part to the success of the iPhone and other “multi-touch” appliances.

But all these different audiences never got the chance to meet and exchange their views on interactivity. Until now. The TinC is the first place where all interested parties can meet and work together.

For LM3LABS and other founding partners, interactivity is not (only) futuristic touch-screens as in the movie Minority Report. Interactivity is already available today in many form factors and there is much more than just “touch” to provide a unique user experience. The goal of the TinC is to showcase what is possible today, and to imagine the future applications of interactivity. TinC’s founding partners are looking forward to a productive discussion between architects, artists, researchers, universities, technologists and more.

In the coming weeks, we will give more details on what we have in store for the Center. There is a lot coming in 2010, so watch this space!

Revolution on the booth

We illustrate a simple solution to deploy for events and exhibitions.

AirStrike sensor is seamlessly installed inside the booth itself and only a narrow cleft allows the “eye contact” between the stereo vision cameras and the pointing fingers.

This installation lets visitors interact with a distant screen by simply pointing in the air toward the screen.
Exhibitors can use larger, higher quality screens which will be more visible to crowds, and will remain unharmed from them.
Despite the “invisible technology”, the touchless interaction is highly attractive by itself.

AirStrike’s precision allows virtually any type of content from picture browsing to hyperlink clicks, from web sites to 3D object handling.

This configuration is so easy to deploy that it can also fit museums, digital signage or retail shops.
